Guest Blog! Alesmith X

February 24, 2010

Yes, it’s a guest blog! This one comes courtesy of Kyle Whitcomb, my friend and former bandmate from The Notice. Kyle (and The Notice) can be reached on Twitter at @thenoticeband.

Brewery: AleSmith Brewing Company
Beer: X, 22 oz. bottle
Style: Extra Pale Ale
POP: Pacific Liquor, 2931 El Cajon Blvd, San Diego, CA 92014
Price: $5.49

While cooking dinner and watching my Lakers do battle against the New York Knicks, I decided to pop open a bottle of AleSmith’s X. I was inspired to purchase this particular beer the other day after a conversation with the proud owner of this blog, Mr. Brian Miller. To do my shopping, I wandered over to my favorite local liqour store, Pacific Liqour, which I might add was also introduced to me by a certain beer blogger.

Like most pale ales, X pours a golden color with a minimal foamy head. This particular pale isn’t nearly as bold and hoppy as many of the others in the craft beer scene, but is extremely well balanced. The sweetness of the malts, bitterness of the hops nor the bite of the alcohol take center stage. Rather they all work together in perfect harmony. Having no standout flavors can sometimes lead to a less-than-interesting beer. However, in this case it simply leads to an excellent example of the genre.

As Mr. Miller said to me the other day, “I don’t think AleSmith makes a beer I dislike.” Agreed sir.
