Stone Double Bastard – Stone’s coming to Chicago!

It’s a party! In honor of Stone Brewing Company’s announcement that they’ll begin Chicago distribution on April 1st, 2010, I decided to pop open the bottle of Double Bastard Ale that I’ve had hanging out in my fridge for a couple weeks. You know, waiting for a special occasion. Stone has announced that they’ll be doing a “Stone Beer Week” (April 1st – April 6th) full of events at area bars and pubs celebrating all things Stone. I’ve already gotten word from Small Bar Fullerton and Small Bar Division St. that they are working on some events for that opening week of Stone goodness in Chicago.
Poured, of course, into my Stone pint glass, it’s a nice deep reddish-brown color with no haziness at all. Light tan foamy head that dissipates into a thin ring around the edge of the glass with a good bit of lacing. The smell is pretty similar to the regular Arrogant Bastard, strong, sugary, and hoppy.
As for the taste: ridiculously malty, toasty, and has almost a syrup-like quality to it. Ironically, it’s got almost an oaky taste, which is odd considering they brew an Oaked Arrogant Bastard, which is a barrel-aged version of Arrogant Bastard. But the overwhelming flavor is toasted malts and hops. Of course at 10.5% ABV, there’s a bit of alcohol in the finish, but it’s nicely done amidst the other strong flavors. Contrary to popular convention, I like this beer colder…as it warms, it takes on almost an acidic taste that lingers a bit too much for my liking.
Final verdict: I’d buy it again…especially since I can get it in Chicago in a month!
